About Our Parish

Trinity North Scituate is a relatively small but incredibly active community. We have over 33 formal ministries, both within the parish and serving the wider community. If one were to stop-into the church campus at any time during the week, you’d find upwards of a dozen individuals present, working on whatever needs to be done–whether it’s keeping-up with the maintenance of our buildings and grounds, preparing food in the kitchen for our next event, sorting and stocking our thriving thrift shop, preparing our worship space for the upcoming Sunday, or keeping-up with the flood of incoming donations for our food pantry. There’s always something to do and always something happening.

We Welcome

There’s a reason that the word “welcome” is the first tenet of our mission statement. Hospitality and fellowship are at the very core of who we are at Trinity and our wider community recognizes it and deeply appreciates us for it.

Our annual Turkey Supper, going on its 47th year, began as a simple way to feed vendors from the popular Scituate Art Festival, who are not able to leave their booths for three days. Since then, it has grown into a cherished tradition for families from near and afar. We serve over 600 meals each year in our parish hall and it requires nearly a month of preparation and over 60 people working together to make it happen. Each year, we enjoy seeing new and familiar faces–entire families who stop on their way home from the Art Festival for a hot meal, warm greetings, and fellowship.

For many years, a sign above our service window in the parish hall read, “We Feed People,” and it couldn’t describe our parish better–literally, figuratively, and spiritually.

Our annual Christmas Bazaar is also an event that our community can’t wait to participate in each year. Spanning two days, we have over two stories of things to offer visitors, from our famous Maids of Honor English pastries to our popular fresh green wreaths and topiaries, to outside vendors, our hot food cafe, and our huge penny social.

We are Open, Affirming, and Inclusive

For 50 years, the Episcopal Church has affirmed that LGBTQ+ people have full and equal claim to the love, acceptance, and pastoral care of the church. Trinity is no exception. We have been proud to walk with brothers and sisters in Christ over the years who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. We love, support, and honor them and they are full members of our parish.

Additionally, we believe that people of every gender, race, age, and background have a place serving in our parish. Our last two long-serving rectors were both female. Our most recent rector’s husband was a Rabbi, and he was as much a beloved member of our parish as anyone else. In fact, he was known for running one of the best and most well-attended bible study programs around and from time-to-time, he even shared some engaging sermons with us based on the Old Testament readings prescribed for that week.

Children are welcome in the main worship space during services and are not relegated to a special nursery space. We delight at the “joyful noises” they sometimes make–they are not a distraction, but instead enhance the experience. The youth of our parish are also offered opportunities to serve as soon as they are willing and able. There are tasks for kids of all ages and abilities.

We Serve God and Our Community

While enough cannot be said about our larger ministries, like the Thrift Shop and Food Pantry, it’s the smaller ones that often go unnoticed, such as Sock Sunday, where the youth of our parish package socks and a candy treat for homeless shelters in Providence. It’s the Meal Angels, who provide food for those in our community who have experienced a health setback or family tragedy. It’s the Prayer Shawl ministry, who graciously make and donate handmade shawls and lap blankets that are available for free to give to someone who needs comfort.

We serve our community by helping to organize and host ecumenical services with the Roman Catholic, Methodist, and Baptist parishes. Our rector is often asked to provide a blessing or invocation at area events like the annual Christmas Concert and Scituate High School’s graduation.

Then there are our outreach efforts, such as the Farmer’s Market Booth we set-up twice per summer. The goal of the booth is to just to be present in the community, offer an activity or a treat, and some kindness–to show everyone the good work that we do and gently invite them to join us.
